Knowledge is Power
Looking ahead at the future of hydropower and a cooperative approach, this article studies the work completed on the Roanoke River. The Nature Conservancy aimed to work with local, state, and federal agencies as well as hydropower project operators to cultivate an approach which would be beneficial for both the river system and all parties involved. The Nature Conservancy calls this new approach "Hydropower by Design" and it aims to deal with total river systems and have an all-encompassing outlook instead of worrying specifically about one dam or hydropower project on a river. The idea is to address large scale issues in regards to river systems which can ultimately show both cost effective benefits and better protection of our resources.
